I'm not a network engineer. I'm the office administrator who orders the network gear. When I took over purchasing in 2020, I didn't know an ONT from an outlet. Since then, I've managed about 60-80 orders a year for a 25-person company—roughly $60,000 in annual spending across 8 vendors. I report to operations and finance, so I care about smooth ordering and clean invoices.
This is the FAQ I wish someone had handed me before I started. It covers what Adtran makes, what an Adtran ONT is for, the HPE phone confusion, and the ever-popular "Klein vs multimeter" question. No textbook answers—just what I've learned ordering the stuff.
What does Adtran actually make?
Adtran makes the equipment that connects your local network to the outside world: fiber access gear like ONTs, Ethernet routers and switches, VoIP gateways, and optical transport platforms. They're a big name for service providers, but smaller offices use them too. The box between your fiber drop and your router is often an Adtran ONT. The gateway that lets older analog phones work over a SIP line could also be Adtran.
In our office, we mostly see the fiber ONT and the router behind it. But when I talk to our provider, they mention the same names on their side of the network. The brand shows up in more places than you'd expect.
I keep a list of part numbers we've ordered. It includes Adtran routers, switches, and ONTs. Once I learned that the name refers to a family of access products, the whole "which one do I need?" conversation got a lot easier.
Do I actually need an Adtran ONT?
If your internet comes over fiber, the ONT is the little box that converts the optical signal to Ethernet. Some providers install their own ONT; other providers require you to supply one. If they require it, you need to match the PON technology.
Do you need an Adtran ONT specifically? Not always. The ONT has to match the provider's network. If you buy a used consumer ONT from an auction site, it might not have the right firmware or management profile. That's why I stick with models our provider has certified.
As of January 2025, Adtran's datasheets list which standard each model supports. GPON is based on ITU-T G.984. XGS-PON is based on ITU-T G.9807. Those standards are not interchangeable. If the provider says GPON, do not order an XGS-PON unit just because it sounds faster. So glad I double-checked the part number before ordering one—I almost picked the wrong ONT, and that return cycle would have been ugly.
Does HPE still make phones?
Short answer: no. As of January 2025, HPE is focused on servers, storage, and Aruba networking. Desk phones are not part of its product line.
Part of the confusion comes from HP Inc., the separate company that makes laptops and printers. HP Inc. acquired Poly, which makes desk phones, conference phones, and headsets. But that's not HPE. So if someone types "does still make phones" into a search bar, the answer depends on which HP they mean: HPE does not; HP Inc. technically does through Poly.
It doesn't help that the name "HP" still hangs around from the old enterprise days. When someone says "HP phone," they might be remembering an old office phone. But HPE and HP Inc. split in 2015, and neither one sells new desk phones under the HPE label.
For VoIP handsets, look at Poly, Yealink, or Fanvil. If you need to keep legacy analog phones alive on a SIP line, that's where an Adtran VoIP gateway does the job.
What does "Klein vs multimeter" actually mean?
One of our field techs asked me to order "a Klein vs multimeter." I think he meant "a Klein multimeter or another brand." Klein Tools makes voltage testers, multimeters, and hand tools. A multimeter is a category, not a competitor.
A basic Klein digital multimeter covers continuity and simple voltage tests. That's enough for most ONT installations—you're mainly checking that Ethernet is good and the power supply is alive. A cable certifier would do more, but most of our installs don't need one. If you buy the expensive tool and never use it, that's not smart procurement.
The important thing is to know the difference between a tester, a certifier, and a multimeter. If you're ordering for a field tech, ask what test they'll actually run. It's sorta like comparing "Adtran vs router" without knowing what category you're actually in.
Can I order a small quantity without getting ignored?
Yes, but choose your distributor carefully. I've placed orders for one ONT and orders for dozens. The vendors who took the single-unit order seriously are the ones I trust now. There's something satisfying about a small order that arrives complete and correct. Small doesn't mean unimportant; it means potential.
If a distributor won't answer a pre-sales question because it's a small order, that's a red flag. I've also run into minimum-order rules. There's a difference between a legitimate packaging minimum and a vendor that just doesn't want to be bothered. The first one is fine if they're upfront. The second one is a warning sign.
The distributor who spent ten minutes explaining why I needed one Adtran model over another earned a much bigger order later. A $300 order today can become a $30,000 order next year. Good suppliers know that. The ones who don't, I cross off the list.
How do I avoid ordering the wrong part?
Slow down and write down the exact part number. I said "the one with the red tab" once. They heard "any version with a red tab." Result: wrong SFP module and a two-week delay. That was a communication failure, not a product problem.
Another mistake I made early on: trusting the autocomplete recommendation on a distributor's website. It showed a "compatible" model, but our provider required a specific firmware version. The part number was right, the firmware was wrong. Now I ask for the full spec sheet before checkout.
Around $3,000 of my annual budget goes to returns, give or take. Most of those were avoidable. One vendor who couldn't provide proper invoicing cost us $2,400 in rejected expenses. Now I verify invoicing capability before placing any order.
Should I buy Adtran or something else?
I shouldn't decide that for you. I can tell you what I check: Does the box support the technology your provider uses? Can your team manage it without a boot camp? Does the vendor answer the phone when a one-unit order has a problem?
In my experience, Adtran's fiber access portfolio is broader than most people expect. Carrier-grade reliability doesn't mean it only works in a carrier lab. But I do not buy based on brand alone. I buy based on the person on the other end of the phone who can explain the difference. That's the honest answer.
I also have a bias toward suppliers who send a full spec sheet without making me sit through a sales call. That tells me they expect questions and know how to answer them. It's not exactly a technical spec, but for procurement it matters.
