Comparison conclusion: The GPON 452 asks for more fiber discipline. The 908 asks for more logical port discipline. Neither is harder. They just fail in different places.
Dimension 2: Voltage verification, where your blood pressure is decided
This is where I see the biggest difference between a clean job and a callback. Before you power either device, or a 6300 shelf, prove the power. How to use a multimeter to test voltage? Simple, but people skip steps.
- Set the multimeter to DC voltage for telecom DC plants, or AC voltage if you are checking an AC adapter. Use a CAT III or CAT IV rated meter for field work.
- Confirm probe condition and meter battery. A dead meter reads zero. Zero is not proof.
- Measure source voltage at the feed. For a -48V DC plant, expect roughly -48 to -56 V DC. Check polarity.
- Check the ground reference. Measure between return and ground. Floating grounds cause noise and strange boot failures.
- Record the reading with a timestamp and photo. That photo has saved me more arguments than any email.
- Power up one unit first. Measure again under load. Voltage sag tells you more than a no-load reading.
Per OSHA 1910.333(a)(1), live parts must be de-energized unless justified. For telecom DC plants, that means proving zero energy before touching terminals. The 6300 does not care which CPE you chose if the DC plant is wrong. Your blood pressure will not care either. It will still spike.
I have mixed feelings about rush deployments. On one hand, customers want the service now. On the other, I have seen the rework rush orders cause. I compromise with a pre-power checklist that takes 10 minutes but stays mandatory.
