5. Plug in the phone and read the LEDs
Connect the phone to the port with a known-good cable. Watch the link LED and the PoE LED. If there is no power, try another PoE port. If there is power but no link, swap the patch cable. The question is not 'did it power on?' The question is 'did it register?' A phone that powers on but does not register is not turned on in any useful sense. It is just a warm plastic rectangle.
7. Document the real cost per port
After the phone works, write down the switch port, PoE class, patch cable length, config time, and any adapter or labor cost. This is the step that separates a one-off fix from a managed rollout. What I mean is that the 'cheap' phone install is not just the phone price—it is the PoE budget you consumed, the switch port you used, the cable, the labor, and the support time if it fails.
