How to know which scenario you're in
If you've typed “ADTRAN ADTRAN” into a search box, you're probably not looking for a typo. You're seeing the brand from two sides at once. ADTRAN Holdings is the parent company, and ADTRAN Networks SE—the former ADVA business—is now part of the same family. That's why a product list can include the NetVanta 5660, the N93, and the Infinity Pro offering in one conversation. They're not competing answers to the same question. They operate at different layers.
It took me about four years of contract reviews to understand this. I don't view hardware and support as separate decisions anymore. You need a router, an access device, a management layer, and a support level. The mistake is choosing them in the wrong order, or choosing the cheapest one first just because the price tag is easier to compare.
There is no “best” ADTRAN setup
If you strip away the product names, you're actually making four decisions:
- Network edge: What carries traffic between sites? The NetVanta 5660 fits here.
- Fiber access or demarcation: What sits at the building or site? That's where the N93 often appears.
- Management and automation: How does your team see and control the fleet? Infinity Pro is the layer we talk about for that.
- Support contract: How fast do you need a fix when something fails? That's the Bronze vs Silver question.
The order matters. Start with the architecture, then the box, then the management, then the support. If you choose support before architecture, you'll end up paying for a tier that doesn't match the actual risk.
Scenario A: You're replacing a central-site router → NetVanta 5660
The NetVanta 5660 is the product I see most often when an enterprise decides to consolidate its edge. It's a central router that can handle Ethernet WAN, high-throughput routing, and VPN termination in one unit. When I review a 5660 spec, I don't just look at the number of ports. I look at the total cost of running it for five years: configuration time, training, firmware maintenance, and the cost of a hardware failure in production.
It's tempting to compare list prices with another vendor and make a decision in one afternoon. But I've seen too many projects where the lower-priced box required more setup time and a second support contract. In my experience, the router that costs the least on paper can be the most expensive after you include the first failed deployment.
Scenario B: You're deploying fiber access or a site handoff → N93
The N93 is a different kind of decision. It's a small access device, the kind of unit that gets installed in a basement, a closet, or a utility room. It doesn't get the same attention as a big router, but it still gets touched by your team when something is wrong.
Because the N93 is lower in cost, it's tempting to apply the cheapest support tier to every unit. That can be the right move if you keep a spare in stock. A spare N93 is often a better use of money than paying for premium support on each individual unit. But if every site requires a truck roll and you can't afford a long outage, then the support tier becomes more important than the price of the unit.
This is one place where my “value over price” bias gets tested. I'll still say it: don't decide N93 support based on the unit price. Base it on how expensive the outage is at the location where the unit sits.
Scenario C: You're trying to manage a fleet → Infinity Pro
Once you have more than a handful of devices, the day-to-day problem isn't the hardware. It's visibility. You need to know which sites are running old firmware, which configs have drifted, and what the current state of the network actually is. That's where Infinity Pro comes into the picture.
If I'm specifying 50 NetVanta 5660s and N93s together, I'd rather spend money on a good management and automation layer than on a higher support tier for every device. The management layer reduces the number of support tickets in the first place. That's a bigger saving than a faster RMA on a box that rarely fails.
For a single site or a very small network, Infinity Pro might be overkill. The CLI and local management work fine. But for a multi-site network, the cost of manually logging into each device is a hidden cost that won't show up on any invoice.
Scenario D: Bronze vs Silver support—what actually changes?
It's tempting to think of Bronze vs Silver as two price points. In practice, it changes response windows, escalation paths, and how quickly you can get a replacement. The exact definitions vary by product and contract, so I always ask for the current ADTRAN ProServices matrix. The version I have on my desk is dated January 2025; check the latest one before you sign.
My lean is toward Silver when the site runs 24/7, when remote hands are not available, or when an outage hits revenue directly. Bronze is not a bad tier. It's just designed for a different risk profile.
Here's the example I use when someone asks why we upgraded a NetVanta 5660 to Silver. In Q1 2024, our quality audit found a site where a 6-hour outage would have cost more in lost orders than three years of the Silver support delta. The support tier was originally Bronze because the PO was written a year earlier without checking the SLA. That issue cost us a rework of the contract and a lot of uncomfortable calls. We changed the standard after that.
Granted, Silver isn't the right answer for every site. If you have spare gear, a tech on site, and the business can tolerate next-business-day response, Bronze might be the smarter use of money. This is why the scenario approach works better than a blanket rule.
How to know which scenario you're in
Ask this question first: if a device fails tonight, what happens? If the answer is “fine, we can deal with it tomorrow,” you can lean on Bronze and keep spares. If the answer is “we lose thousands of dollars per hour,” choose Silver and make sure the SLA matches that risk.
Then ask the architecture question: is this a single router need or part of a broader fiber build? A standalone NetVanta 5660 doesn't require the same management layer as a fleet of N93s. A fleet is where Infinity Pro starts to pay for itself.
The honest answer is that there is no one “best” ADTRAN configuration. There's a best configuration for your uptime requirements, your team's capacity, and your tolerance for hidden costs.
Bottom line: price is what you write on the PO. Cost is what you remember after the outage. Make the support decision after you know how much an outage costs you. Do that, and Bronze vs Silver becomes a straightforward calculation, not a guessing game.
