  • If you need a cordless phone. Wait, what? Okay, the 411 is a pure ONT—no built-in VOIP or cordless phone support. You’d need an additional ATA or VOIP gateway. That’s a hidden cost if you’re assuming it includes voice.

So, the 'Magic Max'? That’s a different beast. But for the 411, the key is knowing when it’s a bargain versus when it’s overkill.

The Hidden Cost Trap

Because here’s the thing—I almost went with a different vendor for our 2024 deployment. They quoted $38 per ONT for a 500-unit order. Adtran quoted $49. I almost pulled the trigger on the $38 unit until I calculated TCO.

The $38 vendor charged $15 per unit for basic support (I know, ridiculous), $22 for a static IP config (which we needed for 30% of our business subscribers), and a $300 'integration fee' to make their API work with our OLT. The Counter-Argument

Someone will say: 'But wait, you’re just an Adtran fanboy.' Fair point. Part of me hates that I’ve become a loyalist. Another part knows that loyalty saved us during the supply chain crisis in 2022, when Adtran prioritized existing customers and we got our units while other ISPs waited six months. I compromise by having a secondary vendor for critical spares, but the 411 is now our standard for any new fiber build.
