What Does Adtran Do? A Cost Controller's Take on XGS-PON ONTs and Phone Resets

I manage procurement for a 230-person regional fiber provider. For the past six years, I've been responsible for roughly $180,000 in annual network equipment spending, and I've compared enough vendor quotes to know that the lowest price on paper rarely matches the lowest cost in practice. That's the context for how I almost missed the real cost of an Adtran XGS-PON ONT rollout.

We compared eight vendors over three months using our TCO spreadsheet. Adtran won because of per-port pricing, interoperability with our existing OLTs, and a broad enough portfolio to cover everything from ONTs to VoIP gateways. But my spreadsheet was built around hardware costs, not around support tickets. The Q2 2024 email changed that.

The trigger was an email from our field ops lead. Subject: 'How do you reset a phone?' I assumed it was a customer support issue. It wasn't. He was standing next to a freshly installed Adtran XGS-PON ONT, looking at a cordless phone base that had no dial tone. The old gateway was gone. The new fiber was live. The phone was silent. That email changed how I think about fiber equipment procurement.

The surface problem: 'How do you reset a phone?'

On its own, resetting a cordless phone is trivial. You unplug the base, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. That's what anyone would expect. It doesn't work when the phone is not the actual problem.

In our case, the phone was connected to an FXS port on an Adtran TA 900e series access gateway. The gateway had been removed because it was no longer needed for the old DSL connection. But it was still the device responsible for turning IP voice into an analog signal for the cordless base. The new XGS-PON ONT replaced the DSL transport, but it didn't automatically provide the same telephony port. So when the field tech reset the cordless phone, it was trying to register to a line that no longer existed.

The deeper problem: ONT vs. phone gateway

Everything I'd read about XGS-PON said the ONT is the center of the new fiber service. That's true from a transport standpoint. But the conventional wisdom misses a critical detail: the ONT terminates fiber, not analog voice. If you're supporting a customer with a cordless phone, you need a device with an FXS port, like Adtran's TA 900e or another integrated access device. The ONT gives the customer Ethernet. The IAD gives the customer dial tone. You rarely skip one without paying for it later.

Older DSL deployments often used a single integrated access device that handled both internet and voice at the same time. When you move to fiber, those functions usually split. The ONT handles transport. The router handles data. The voice gateway handles the phone. But that split isn't obvious on the first project, especially when the old setup was one small box with a cordless phone plugged into the back of it.

So when someone asks 'what does Adtran do?' I now answer it this way: Adtran makes the equipment that gets a service provider's signal to the customer's wall. That includes OLTs in the central office, XGS-PON ONTs at the residence or business, routers, switches, VoIP gateways, and optical transport platforms. It's not a one-box company. And because it's not a one-box company, procurement has to be careful about which box is doing which job.

The Adtran XGS-PON ONT we standardized on, an SDX series unit, has been reliable. Provisioning is straightforward. The fiber handoff is exactly what we expected from a 10G-capable symmetrical passive optical network endpoint. My frustration was never with the ONT itself. It was with the assumption that the ONT alone would replace a gateway that also provided telephony.

To be fair, some Adtran ONTs include voice ports. But 'some' is not 'all.' When you build a deployment template, you need to specify the exact device variant and add the matching gateway if the customer needs analog phone support. I didn't do that on the first order. One of my biggest regrets: I approved a PO that didn't include enough FXS ports for the pilot sites. That mistake cost about $1,200 in reordering and rush shipping. If I'd checked the spec sheet against the customer's cordless phone requirements, it would have been a five-minute fix. (Note to self: verify the FXS count before every PO.)

The first month after our switch to Adtran XGS-PON ONTs, we logged 19 support tickets related to missing or unstable phone service. Of those, 14 came down to the wrong device being ordered or the wrong reset sequence being used. The direct time cost was manageable. The truck rolls were not.

According to our internal cost tracker, the average truck roll in Q1 2024 cost $112. We sent five. That's $560 in direct labor and fuel. The reorder cost $1,200. The support time added roughly another $1,500. Total tag for a phone reset question: more than $3,200. That's not a huge number in a $180,000 budget, but it's the kind of avoidable cost that quietly eats the margin on a deployment contract.

I'm not 100% sure every provider has the same arithmetic. But I'd argue the pattern is universal: hidden costs hide in the gaps between devices, not inside the devices themselves.

The reset sequence that finally works

Once we documented this, the fix became boring. Standardize on the right equipment and use a service chain reset rather than a phone reset:

Unplug the ONT. Unplug the cordless phone base. Wait at least 30 seconds. Power the ONT first. When the PON light is stable, power the phone base.

If there's still no dial tone after that, the issue isn't 'how do you reset a phone?' It's the provisioning on the voice gateway or the FXS port assignment. No amount of pushing buttons on the phone base is going to fix that.

So glad I insisted on a written reset sequence before we scaled up. It felt like unnecessary documentation at the time. That one page probably saved us from another quarter of tickets. (Finally, a procurement decision that paid for itself.)

Procurement checklist for Adtran equipment

If you're buying Adtran gear for a fiber deployment, ask these questions before you send the PO:

  • Which device terminates the fiber? Look for an XGS-PON ONT with the right OLT and SFP compatibility.
  • Which device terminates the phone line? If you need analog voice, count the FXS ports.
  • Does the customer have a cordless phone that connects to a base station? That base needs an upstream voice port somewhere.
  • Is the reset procedure written down and included in the install checklist?
  • What's the return or restocking cost if you order the wrong SKU?

This is the part where I sound like a cost controller, because I am one. Customer education isn't just a nice thing to do. It's the cheapest way to reduce support costs, rework, and the kind of blame-shifting that happens when nobody documented the handoff between an ONT and a gateway.

The point I keep coming back to

What does Adtran do? It builds the equipment that connects people to modern networks. That's the easy answer. The harder part is understanding which pieces of that equipment are responsible for which service. An Adtran XGS-PON ONT handles the fiber path. A separate VoIP gateway handles the dial tone for a cordless phone. If you confuse the two, the phone won't reset, the truck roll won't help, and the budget will show the damage.

The next time someone asks me 'how do you reset a phone?' I won't just answer the question. I'll ask what the phone is connected to. That's where the real answer is.
