In this case, buying an Adtran SDX621 and trying to configure it from scratch is probably a mistake. The default config on most Adtran routers is workable for basic routing and NAT, but it's not optimized. You'll spend hours reading CLI guides.

My advice: Use Adtran's AOS (Adtran Operating System) web interface if you can. It's not as powerful as the CLI, but it's good enough for standard setups. The SDX621, for example, has a fairly intuitive web UI for VLANs and QoS. You can get it running in about 30 minutes.

Cost trap to avoid: I once worked with a client who saved $200 by buying a used Adtran router off eBay. They spent 3 days trying to configure it, lost a day of productivity, and eventually paid a freelancer $600 to fix the config. Total cost: the 'cheap' router + $600. They'd have been better off buying new with a config template included.

If you're comfortable with CLI and have basic networking knowledge, this can be a great way to save money. But let's be realistic: the cheapest Adtran router you find for $50 will likely be 10+ years old. It's fine for testing, but don't depend on it for production without a backup plan.

Hidden cost I see often: Old firmware. The used router might run an outdated AOS version that has security vulnerabilities. Upgrading the firmware can be tricky if you don't have a support contract. And a contract for an old model costs almost as much as a new router.

In my experience managing about 180 orders over 6 years, the lowest quote has cost us more in about 60% of cases. For this scenario, I'd recommend buying a current-generation model refurbished from a reputable seller (like ADTRAN directly or a certified partner), not from random eBay sellers.

How to Figure Out Which Scenario You're In

  1. Count the number of users/devices that will connect through the router. Under 50? Scenario 1. 50-250? Scenario 2. Under 10 and you're okay with risk? Scenario 3.
  2. Do you have a static IP setup or SIP trunking from a provider? If yes, and you need to configure VOIP (Adtran does this well), lean toward Scenario 2. The VOIP config alone can be tricky.
  3. What's your tolerance for downtime? If the network goes down for 2 hours and you lose $5,000 in revenue, don't pick Scenario 3. Spend the money on a professional setup.

After 6 years of tracking every invoice, I've come to believe that the 'right' setup approach is highly contextual. The worst decision is to just copy someone else's config without understanding why they did it that way.
