If you need USB power delivery while recording list entries to an external drive, ask three questions: Does the USB port support power output? Is it USB-A or USB-C? Does the firmware allow simultaneous event logging and power output? Get the answer in writing from your rep or reseller. Otherwise, you'll only find out during a production test, and by then, the unit is already racked.
6. Does 'top therm' matter for an Adtran deployment?
'Top therm' looks like a typo, but I think it's shorthand for thermal limits. It matters, especially for network gear in unfinished rooms. As of January 2025, Adtran's public datasheets list operating temperature ranges per product. Some NetVanta switches are rated for 0°C to 50°C; outdoor fiber terminals have a wider range. If your installation is in an unventilated telecom closet or a metal enclosure, the top end of that range can be the difference between a stable network and a device that constantly throttles.
That said, we've only tested this in smaller branch locations so far. In a data center, thermal limits are rarely a problem. In a warehouse closet, check the ambient temperature and leave at least a few inches of space around the unit. Verify current specs on Adtran's product pages before you mount anything, because revisions do change.
7. Are Adtran support contracts worth the money?
It depends on where the equipment sits. For edge routers and voice gateways, I buy a support contract. For switches that we can swap from a spare bin in 15 minutes, I usually don't. This three-tier rule saved us roughly $8,400 a year—about 17% of our network maintenance budget.
It took me three years and about 150 orders to understand that the cheapest support option isn't always the best financial decision.
