If you're chasing an intermittent reboot on an Adtran fiber modem or a 6300-series device, don't start with an RMA. Test the capacitors with a multimeter first. I've kept rush deployments on schedule by checking the power supply before ordering a replacement board. A 10-minute capacitor check can save you a 48-hour RMA cycle.
I know that sounds backward. From the outside, a device that keeps losing its fiber link looks like a dead board. The reality is often a bulged capacitor on the PSU, and that's a cheap fix if you catch it early. In my role coordinating field repairs for service provider networks, I've handled 200+ rush orders in 15 years. The fastest fix I know is usually the one that starts with a multimeter.
Adtran Modem Fiber and 6300 Troubleshooting: Start With the Power Supply
Last March, 36 hours before a customer cutover, an Adtran 6300 started dropping optics every couple of hours. Normal RMA turnaround was three to five days, and we didn't have that. So we pulled the unit, looked at the power supply, and spotted a capacitor with a slightly domed top. It didn't read anywhere near its rated value. After replacing it, the unit ran stable through the cutover. The client's alternative was a missed go-live and a $50,000 penalty clause. We avoided it with a $2 part and a steady hand.
Most buyers focus on whether to replace the whole modem and completely miss the power supply capacitors. The question everyone asks is “what's the RMA turnaround?” The question they should ask is “what did the last three failures have in common?” If dust and heat keep killing power supplies, a filter change and a capacitor check are cheaper than a stockpile of replacement boards.
We didn't have a formal capacitor-testing process until 2023. That gap cost us once when we replaced a $400 power supply and the unit still failed two weeks later. The third time the same symptom showed up, I finally created a checklist. Should have done it after the first failure.
How to test a capacitor with a multimeter
Here's the process I use. It's not fancy, but it works.
- Power it down and unplug it. That's not optional. Wait a few minutes for the bulk capacitors to discharge.
- Discharge the capacitor you plan to test. Use a resistor rated for the voltage, or a purpose-built discharge tool. Don't short the leads with a screwdriver. I knew I should use a proper discharge resistor, but once I thought “what are the odds” and shorted a cap with a screwdriver. It sparked, scared me, and I never did it again.
- Set your multimeter to capacitance mode. It's usually marked with a –|(– symbol and reads in microfarads (µF). If your meter doesn't have a capacitance mode, use resistance mode.
- Isolate the capacitor. Ideally, remove at least one lead from the circuit. In-circuit readings can be misleading because other components connected in parallel change the measurement.
- Touch the probes to the terminals. A good capacitor should read close to its rated capacitance. An open capacitor will show the meter's out-of-range reading immediately. A shorted capacitor will read near zero and stay there.
If you're using resistance mode, the reading should start low and climb toward OL as the capacitor charges. If it stays at zero, the capacitor is shorted. If it jumps to OL before moving, the capacitor is open. Either way, replace it.
Also look at the capacitor before touching it. If the top is bulged, the vent is cracked, or there's electrolyte residue around the base, don't even bother testing. Replace it. A capacitor that looks bad is bad.
Why Adtran replacement air filters matter
I know, air filters are not as interesting as multimeters. But a clogged filter kills more hardware than a lot of actual component failures. Dust settles on capacitors and regulators, they run hot, and their lifespan drops. I can't tell you how many times a dead Adtran modem fiber unit had a filter that looked like dryer lint. The filter costs a fraction of a replacement board. Change it during the same maintenance window you test capacitors.
Adtran replacement air filters are part of the boring stuff that keeps the interesting stuff running. If your 6300 lives in a dusty IDF closet, set a reminder. A $20 filter is cheaper than a $500 board, and it's a lot cheaper than a site visit.

When testing capacitors is not the answer
Let me be honest about the limits. A capacitor check is a first step, not a magic fix. If the capacitors read fine and the Adtran 6300 still flaps, look at firmware, SFP optics, provisioning, and upstream OLT settings. Software problems don't show up on a multimeter.
The question everyone asks is “what's the RMA turnaround?” The better first question is “what did the last three failures have in common?” If the answer is dust and bad capacitors, then Adtran replacement air filters and a quick multimeter check are your cheapest insurance. If the answer is firmware mismatch, testing capacitors won't help.
One more practical note: when you do send a board back, don't try to put it in a large envelope. According to USPS Business Mail 101 (usps.com), a large envelope is only good up to 12 by 15 inches and 0.75 inch thick. A power board barely fits in a padded mailer and likely won't survive. Use a proper box with enough padding. The return label may say it's fine, but your job is to get the part back in one piece so the RMA doesn't turn into a second emergency.
In my book, a ten-minute test is worth more than a three-day RMA. Just make sure you're testing the right thing before you turn a routine maintenance day into an emergency.
